Part 2: What is a belt?
Before buttons, zippers and elastic bands, waist cords and belts were essential for closing the upper garment and holding up the lower one. Worn at the waist, the center of the body, the belt naturally draws the eye, and its color and material varied with social status. The Samguk Sagi records that when King Heungdeok set new dress regulations in 834, his ninth year on the throne, he declared, 'People have high and low, and positions have noble and humble; so it is with clothing.
